Installing an Outdoor rangehood Gride lines

To find the right outdoor rangehood it is essential to understand your area and the appliances you are installing

What is the cooking area of the BBQ you need to cover, and is there any other appliance the hood would need to cover, e.g., a Wok Burner? As a rule, The Rangehood should be larger than the cooking area.

Note: The Standard most common sizes for BBQ range hoods are  900mm, 1200mm, 1500mm

How do you plan to mount the Rangehood? Here you have a couple of options.

Type of rangehood install

Wall Mounted -  Most outdoor range hoods installed in Australia are mounted on a wall.

Ceiling mounted hood/ Island Rangehood - These are mounted from the Ceiling

Undermount - These are placed inside a cabin above the hood

1200 above

With a BBQ rangehood  the intake to sit min of 1200 mm above the grill cooking surface

So you will need to know the height of the Ceiling to find the right rangehood to fit

The stand height for an outdoor kitchen bench is 900mm high from the ground so your cooking area will mostly like sit at 900mm with the base of the hood sitting 1200 above that if your ceiling is 2.6 m or 2600 mm high you need to take the 900mm bench height and 1200 mm clearance to find how much room you have for your hood eg 2600mm - ( 900mm + 1200mm)  = 500 mm space for the range hood.

Power/suction needed for the space

How powerful a hood do I need? This depends on how ventilated your space is and the type of cooking you are doing. If you cook with charcoal and use a lot of marinades, you will want something more powerful.

Noise Level

Most BBQ rangehood will have a noise rating in decibels (Decibels (dB) are the standard unit of measurement for sound intensity, with higher decibel levels indicating louder sounds)

 Decibels Chart

These ratings however are very rough guides as other variables are things like the room the unit is located in

  • a ‘hard’ room with hardwood floors will reverberate noise much more than a soft cushiony type carpeted room.
  • How open or closed the room is as sound will bounce off walls

Checklist

  1. Does the Hood cover the BBQ and all the appliances(eg wok burner) it needs to cover?
  2. Is the BBQ to be mounted from the ceiling or on a wall?
  3. There are no hazards to prevent the correct mounting of the Hood
  4. Is it going to be ducted out of the wall or ceiling, if the ceiling is the roof metal or tiles?
  5. Is there room to fit rangehood if mounted min 1200mm above the cooking surface
  6. How close in is the room, does the hood have the power/suction needed for the space?
  7. Will the rangehood ducting requirement work in the space?
